Sorry, I forgot to tell you I ran memtest and it reported no errors.
I completely failed as a bug tester... Don't take it personally: I often
switch my computer on with a purpose, but only remember that purpose when I
switch it off to go to bed...
It's also worth noting that my system hasn't complained about anything
python-related in the 2 months since that package failed to
install/upgrade.
If I ever need to submit another bug report, I'll try harder to follow
it through.
