Update: the headers directory was missing, and I might have accidentally deleted it myself, but 'reinstalling' the linux-headers packages, I now have version.h here:
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-11-generic/include/linux/version.h Looks like I should symlink the *headers*, not the *source*.
