Problem was reproduceable with 2.6.33-020633rc5-generic and 2.6.32-02063206-generic. xorg-edge added to the mix lead to X not starting at all. Purged packages from PPA and then reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and system revered to normal lock behavior upon starting a GL app.
