I've got a HP Probook 5310m with Kubuntu 9.10 with the gnome networkmanager
applet (otherwise I can't get my secure wireless to work). And have exactly the
same problems. When booting without cable no networkcard is listed. When
booting with cable no probs (using it right now). But when I unplug it, the
system crashes and cabs-lock light is on.
David, did you already found a solution for this?

System crashes if cable hot unplugged; No interface but "lo" listed by ifconfig
if cable isn't plugged when booting; wireless doesn't work at all.
