The other thing I have noticed today is the screen just before the KDM screen is probably the same screen as the screen which occurs if you are logged multiple times (e.g. in another terminal) and you want to restart/shut down the computer and asks you what to do with other logged in users ("Abort active sessions" dialogue). This should be helpful for debugging, the screen appears only for a short time at startup and it is quite difficult to see over. (By the way, it looks quite strange that there is an image like http://fedoreando.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/kde-4-3-ksplash.png on the background of "Abort active sessions" dialog.)
