I am having the same problem on Acer Extensa EX5235-901G16MN with chipset Intel GL40, graphics card Intel GMA 4500M.
With the i915.modeset=0 the system boots but I am unable to play any DVD or video via Totem, VLC or other media player as GUI crashes back to login page.
