in my IBM X32 with Karmic and 2.6.31-9-rt #152-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT if I dont have the agere_sta_fw.bin installed it complains that it cannot download it. Nevertheless it connects to my home wifi (with password) with no problem. However I cannot connect to other networks which are open. Iwlist just does not see them. Once the firmware is in lib/firmaware iwlist can see the networks and it looks like I can connect to them but I cannot get anything going. Some output :
