I have what looks like the same problem on 9.10 with the latest updates as of January 31, 2010. I can connect with a shell script I found on the Net but not with NetworkManager: as grn said, "The rotating spikes freeze on attempting to connect, and after a minute or so, 'Network disconnected' message appears."
