Are you booting with the graphical boot splash screen (usplash) enabled,
or without it?
Note that without the use of usplash, we have an unfortunate (and
unresolvable, for karmic) contention issue between mountall and
cryptsetup. For lucid, this is solved with the migration to plymouth.
