The same problem on Aspire 5100, Ubuntu 9.10, Alsa 1.0.20. Thanks a lot to gio10!!! After changing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf I can use external mic with skype. In the same time the quality of recordings using gnome-sound-recorder is awful, internal mic doesn't work still.
