Well, guess g-p-m uses stderr:

Try instead: $ gnome-power-manager --no-daemon --verbos &> g-p-m.log

After having g-p-m running, suspend the laptop. Then check the file for errors. 
If you
need to paste the entire log file, please use the attachment tool.
