I am experiencing the same issue, but for me it is not confined to synaptic, but appears to be many (all?) of the applications that launches the administrative-privileges application first.
This includes (but may not be limited to): - Synaptic - Installing .deb files manually - Software Sources When I installed Karmic I asked it to include the encrypted home folder option. This has worked fine before, but I believe that it is somehow related to the issue. Every time I try to do one of the three tasks listed above, the following appears in /var/log/syslog: Feb 5 08:27:38 jTop kernel: [ 816.657636] Valid eCryptfs headers not found in file header region or xattr region Feb 5 08:27:38 jTop kernel: [ 816.657645] Either the lower file is not in a valid eCryptfs format, or the key could not be retrieved.
