Without the backports loaded my wifi drops all by itself every now and then, now Im able to have a stable connection as long as I dont download data over 900kb/s. It drops after about 45 seconds of continous "high speed" transfer. I dont have the same problems with the speed drops, its the whole connection. Last drop I waited for 35 minutes for it to reconnect, then I rebooted. Have tried both WPA-PSK and WEP and no diffrence so I dont think its the encryption.
I have read that there is a issue with the Asus UL30A and wifi (the one Im on) but all the forumposts has a happy ending when ppl install the backports...
