This may be the problem I have too with OO 3.1 under Ubuntu: when no
dictionary is installed (and there wasn't one be default, although it is
not at first obvious; I had only Hunspell for spelling for some reason,
which isn't any use for English) the spelling checker reports no errors,
and never mentions it is because there is no dictionary. These are the
(simple) changes that I think are needed:

1. When no dictionary is installed it should display a suitable warning
message when attempting any spelling/grammar activity, and make it clear
how to install one (at the moment it is very non-obvious no dictionary
is installed for the language, and installing one requires several steps
not covered in the help... for example, after Tools->Options->Writing
Aids->Edit->"Get more dictionaries on-line" it is not enough to merely
use Tools->Extension manager, you have to quit out of OpenOffice and
restart, and even then I think I had to reboot befoire it acted on the
dictionary).

2. When one of more dictionaries are installed, it should show them in
Tools->Options->Writing Aids without me having to click on "Edit"

3. After displaying the "Spelling check is complete" message it should
still be possible to get to the "Spelling:" window and change options,
change language, etc. At the moment this window disappears as soon as
the check complete notice goes away.

4. There should be a button in Writing Aids (and duplicated on the
Spelling window) that does the whole job of installing a dictionary
(maybe not actually getting it from a website if that is too difficult,
but at least installing the extension, and doing whatever is needed to
make it active - possibly asking the user if it is okay to restart OO
then.

I would also like to see several improvements in dictionary support,
e.g. being able to use dictionaries from other software, being able to
tag words or phrases in a dictionary or thesaurus for level of
difficulty or cliche status, so new tools could report on the
appropriateness of the writing style for different types of reader.
