I got this same error in edgy, trying to install from vmware-player- kernel-source while running a custom kernel. Didn't try the workaround.
I just installed the vmware-player package and the source package from synaptic, then went into the source directory and ran make-kpkg. -- make-kpkg cannot compile module sources https://launchpad.net/bugs/48755 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
