Thanks! I found that hidden away... Now, everything works just fine!

However, I think it's really possible to make the sound tools in
Ubuntu Gnome a little more "understandable". I really don't think that
all the Capture Mux, PCM etc etc should be possible for a common user
to access in the Volume Control (Alsa mixer).  It's just plain
confusing. I'm aware that it's difficult to make generic GUIs that
would cover all types of hardware setup on a PC, but I would say:
simplify them, and rather make advanced GUIs that the expert user can
install in addition.

Also, the error messages are really strange. My grandma wouldn't
exactly know what to do if she encountered these. (I didn't and I'm a
system developer...)
