Public bug reported:

Hi,

(sorry, I cannot give all the links and cannot respond quickly to
questions since the problem occured while I am on a trip to New Zealand
and do have Internet access only every few days.)

I have an MSI U100 "netbook" computer. Since upgrading to karmic, there
was a problem with the screen flashing and flickering, and the
adjustment of screen brightness. When starting gnome, the screen kept
blinking and gnome displayed that the brightness up/down buttons were
continuously pressed. Somewhere (that's the information I don't have
available right now, must have been launchpad or the ubuntu wiki) the
problem was described and the proposed solution was to upgrade the BIOS
to the latest version provided by MSI. I did that and the screen problem
was indeed solved.

But since then, the notebook sometimes (about once or twice a day)
performs an immediate shutdown without warning. You can't do anything,
it just goes down and turns off within 1-2 seconds.

In some cases (not in all!) I could then find an entry in the kern.log
like

kernel: [ 1659.888852] Critical temperature reached (110 C), shutting
down.

Which is not true. Neither feels the machine warm (not even the air the fan is
blowing out), nor does my gnome cpu temperature indicate anything above 60
degree. It's even around 50 degree in normal use.

I guess that there is some problem between the new BIOS and maybe the
new kernel (I've upgraded karmic at the same time).

Since my time and my technical options are limited on this trip and I
can't provoke the problem to test it, I could not yet verify whether
this happens with the latest kernel only.

Since this destroys the current session, it is a severe problem.

regards
Hadmut
