Regarding my previous comment - here is an interesting behavior: 1. I have an OWA account configured and enabled. 2. I get the "formatting message" problem on an IMAP account: I select a message and the message preview stays blank with a "Formatting message" progress notification that can't be cancelled, but if I open a message viewer on that message it works fine - all as documented in this bug. 3. I open the preferences dialog and disable the OWA account.
