hmm update. i am getting this bug again.
it occurs with all external harddisks, pen drives, interal harddisks (like my
windows partition).

nautilius shows all these drives but gives error in mounting hence cant
open them.

one workaround is that always when starting the system if i select the earlier
kernel ie 2.6.31-13 i think it always works perfectly and then restart and
select the latest kernel ie -14 (maybe it was -12 working and -13 problematic
but which ever is latest is problematic) it works the first time. but then if i
restart again then it wont work with the latest kernel.
this is why i am now preferinng to boot into earlier kernel itself.

the bug is weird indeed.
pls tell me what other info i can provide.

it seems there might be some similarity with
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/518533.
