Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. There are a couple
more pieces of information which may be useful here.

On one of the computers which exhibits this problem, could you try
booting with an older LiveCD, or a different distro's LiveCD, and see if
you can still reproduce this?

Also, is it possible that the affected card readers might be based on
the same chip? The results of 'lsusb' on the affected machines might be
helpful.

It almost seems as though the write protect sense switch inside the
readers have gone bad, but it'd be pretty weird for two readers to have
the same problem all the sudden.
