Thank you for the reply. And I'm sorry I forgot to report one more thing. I replaced the Xubuntu Jaunty with a fresh-installed Xubuntu Karmic two months ago. In Karmic, modifying /etc/default/console-setup had no effect. (I don't know why. Maybe because HAL is deprecated in Karmic???) So I instead created ~/.xprofile, whose content was
