@Alex Murray: the option doesn't seem to work on my macbook 5,2 OTOH, I finally managed to get ste's grub-efi working. I suspect it didn't work before because I had set the OS X partition to be "case sensitive". Some other programs on OSX fail to work with this setting as well, so I would suggest creating only the most common type of hfsplus partition.
