I get the same issue. Current 9.10 (as of 2/23/10). The white rectangles
are actually windows that haven't really been drawn - I was able to
copy/paste the (invisible) text from it, which is (on 2 different
occasions):

"Unable to mount 993 MB Filesystem"

and

"Not Authorized"

You can close them by guessing where the [X] button is (upper right of
rectangle) but none the less this it's annoying (probably much moreso to
those who can't troubleshoot it on their own). My wife and I use the
same computer..wonder if 9.10 is jealous of married couples. ;)
