I would also like to add that this might also point an underlying hardware problem, which would not be a bug in ubuntu. If the whole computer freeze, including the mouse, this has many chances to be a CPU overheat problem. I would highly recommend you to boot any Ubuntu LiveCD, and choose the memory test that appears in the menu. If you let your computer run the test and that it freezes during the test, that definitively means that the computer present some hardware failure.
