What video driver is this freeze encountered with? Please attach your Xorg.0.log and the output of lspci -vvnn which will answer this question.
If you're using Intel graphics, a bunch of fixes have been posted to that driver which might obviate this freeze. Please test against Lucid Alpha-3 or newer, and if you can still reproduce it there we'll need to have a batchbuffer dump.
