Apparently I do not have libflashsupport, my knowledge is incomplete.
However, my reasoning for (a) was that flash froze (while remaining in
the pulseaudio 'current applications' list) and all flash video froze
after one buffer-ful, but mplayer could still play through pulse.

I did note the two flash plugin methods available in ubuntu, but did not
know whether they were related. The system chose whatever was the
default.

I am happy to try the dev version of PA. I would need some slightly more
detailed instructions but will google for ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev and see
what I find. No set of instructions is immediately obvious, and the
option is not clearly available in any synaptic menu. Perhaps
https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev should link to a web page
somewhere with useful information?

I had noted the updated hda in the alsa tree. I find it hard to know
which patches are in any ubuntu variant because synaptic just offers
"Updates available" but the updates do not include a changelog (as they
do in e.g. gentoo)

If I interpret the above correctly, I'm using adobe-flashplugin. This
system was freshly installed as J, updated to K on about 15th Feb, when
stable, due to too many PM-related kernel crashes in J.

Does this answer all the questions above?
