I had the same issue.

I had the linux-server package installed which had the linux-
image-2.6.31-19-server installed.

But since I'm running ubuntu on a ESX Vm I tried to install the linux-
virtual package. Aptitude tried to install the linux-
image-2.6.31-19-virtual but didn't succeed. This happend because linux-
image-2.6.31-19-virtual tries to overwrite the files in
/boot/*-2.6.31-19-server.

I had to install an other version of the linux virtual image boot in it
and uninstall all the linux-image-*-server package and then install the
latest linux virtual image.

I think tha the linux virtual image should try to create its own files
in /boot/ like for instance *-2.6.31-14-virtual.

Thanks,
