Had the same problem on a fresh karmic 64 bit. .xsession-errors gave: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... mkdtemp: private socket dir: Permission denied
solved it by changing the permissions for /tmp -- There is a problem with the configuration server.
