I also have a 3g modem issue. I am using a huawei e1762, The opposite is correct for me.
Only if i have it inserted at boot is it likely to work. Seemed to be working perfectly for lucid alpha 3, until I installed all updates from the 7th of March 2010. After that 3G modem was very unreliably detected.
