I have made a patch for gcalctool 5.29.1 to solve this bug. Additionally it moves the 'Angle units' widget next to the buttons in the scientific_panel. IMHO this is far more effective and it looks nice.
The only issue left: in Basic View the display is a bit too narrow for the new widget. Furthermore the Basic View should stay *basic*. I propose to disable visibility of the format widget and force 'Decimal' while in Basic View.
