I'd like to reopen this bug. In my opinion, version 0.0.8 of ubuntu-mono
is the *opposite* of what it should be: the icon has a different shade
of gray when there are no new messages and the same shade of gray of the
other icons when new messages arrive. This means it's more difficult to
notice it when new messages arrive!

I understand that the designers probably wanted consistency with the
different shade of gray that icons such as bluetooth and volume adopt
when they are in a "disabled" state, but the messaging menu is a
completely different concept, and I personally believe it should
*really* get the attention of the user by changing to a non-gray color
like green or red.
