John, I wish there was a set of steps I could give you to reproduce it, but really any set of steps involving both firefox and a small amount of time will cause the problem for me.
I can log into Ubuntu after a restart - start firefox - not navigate anywhere (just leave my home page up) - come back in an hour and it'll have disappeared. I recently installed opera via apt-get and tried that - after browsing for about 5 minutes, it too choked. I'm really not sure what to make of this, a rarer proplem, though still occurs more often than I'd like, is that gnome will just black out and I'll be back at the GDM prompt.
