If I remember, I searched a lot on the improper shutdown issue. Finally I found some thread in which it is said that the problem is caused by the driver for the wireless card, and the installation of linux- backports-modules as suggested seems to have resolved the problem. After that, everything is fine even after I upgraded to 9.10. BTW: a new problem in the boot up appeared recently after I updated to the kernel 2.6.31-20-generic, which results in a black screen before seeing the login screen and it happened very often. Anyway, this is another story. I haven't got time to report it. I will do if it continues to appear.
