It is still an issue. I am currently using Lucid and the 2.6.33 kernel from the mainline PPA. Occasionally the microphone will pick up a lot of noise and only my voice if I am touching the microphone with my lips, and at these times the speakers can also be muted when I plug headphones in. The rest of the time, the microphone does not work and when I plug headphones in the sound comes out of them and the laptop's speakers. The Terminal command you left does not work; the error message states that -p is not a valid option.
