I still have this problem.  The workaround mentioned above does not
always work reliably;  sometimes.  However,  restarting dbus when gdm is
stopped always works; although it also prints an asyncronous error-
message:

# /etc/init.d/gdm stop ;  sleep 2 ; /etc/init.d/dbus st
op ;  sleep 2 ; /etc/init.d/dbus start ;  sleep 2 ; /etc/init.d/gdm start
 * Stopping GNOME Display Manager...                                     [ OK ] 
 * Stopping System Tools Backends system-tools-backends                  [ OK ] 
 * Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon                        [ OK ] 
 * Stopping bluetooth                                                    [ OK ] 
 * Stopping Hardware abstraction layer hald                              [ OK ] 
 * Stopping system message bus dbus                                      [ OK ] 
 * Starting system message bus dbus                                      [ OK ] 
 * Starting Hardware abstraction layer hald                              [ OK ] 
 * Starting bluetooth                                                    [ OK ] 
 * Starting Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon avahi-daemon                        [ OK ] 
 * Starting System Tools Backends system-tools-backends                  [ OK ]

# X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
