This is getting confusing. I removed the xorg.conf, and rebooted without the 'nomodeset' option. Nouveau came up properly, in 1680x1050 resolution. I do not know why it is now working; there have been a few updates. When I reinstalled the xorg.conf, and un-commented the "monitor" stuff, nouveau crashed. So I don't get it, but it is working now. I will nonetheless send the apport-collect.
