I tried running the command you suggested.  I didn't notice anything
crash as a result.

You have to bear in mind that this may have been a result of an upgrade to 
v10.04 from 9.10 that did not complete.
The upgrade was stopped at configuring NTP (?).  I left it like that for over 
half-an-hour and nothing changed.  The system was active but the upgrade window 
was unresponsive.  I hit CTRL-C in an attempt to cancel the upgrade but all 
that happened as a result of that was that the screen eventually went black.  I 
pressed the power button to turn it off, then attempted to start up as normal.  
X was not displaying anything so I again hard-restarted the PC.  When GRUB came 
up I noticed a recovery option.  I chose that.  From what I can tell it 
attempted to reinstall missing and erroneous packages.  When it was done I 
started X (startx).  It didn't seem right, I restarted it again.  When it came 
up there were many crashes.  I reported several, this was one.
