Public bug reported: Binary package hint: e2fsprogs
After a power cut my drive needed to be checked. The information was not very clear "Your drive contains errors [SIMF]" or something. What do the letters mean? I waited a long time (30 min or so) and nothing changed, so I ctrl-alt-delete and rebooted with a back up partition, fscked from there and got myself going again. (needed an interactive fsck) Recovery mode was also unhelpful. The lucid boot should be more transparent about what has gone wrong, what it is doing to put things right, and not appear to hang.
