Public bug reported:

Problem: System freezes and reboots during attempt to copy a line from
kern.log after excessive entries into it.

Expected behaviour: System remains stable so I can investigate the
initial problem. ;)

Details:

The problems with the RTL8192SE drivers are discussed in length in
#401126 and #457872 suggests there might be several problems related to
it.

Background: The wifi driver for my Toshiba Qosmio x500-10U's RTL8192SE
is not directly supported through the Ubuntu repositories and has to be
compiled by hand after each kernel update.

This worked fine until the most recent kernel update ("uname -a" follows)
Linux TRULYON 2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 04:38:19 UTC 2010
x86_64 GNU/Linux
/proc/version_signature identifies the version as "Ubuntu
2.6.31-20.58-generic", which corresponds to my standard amd64 Karmic install.

The driver I'm using is rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit discussed in
#401126 and similar entries.
After several tries the driver finally compiled last Friday and it seemed to
work fine.

When I powered up the machine today and tried to retrieve new commits
from a project's GIT repository the initial list retrieval took
seemingly forever without a result and the kern.log was flooded with
"DMA: Out of SW-IOMMU space for 9100 bytes at device 0000:0a:00.0"
entries.

Once I tried to copy a line from "System > Administration > Log File
Viewer" for a Google search (machine was connected through the Atheros'
port (eth0) at that point since wifi didn't seem to work) the system
just froze, didn't accept any peripheral input and after a while
rebooted with no error message whatsoever.

This is reported as a new bug rather than a variation of bug #457872
since the problem didn't occur after the installation but only after a
full reboot (used the Windows partition during the weekend for some
games).

Note: The "linux" package was automatically selected once I used the crash
report tool.
Here's the output of "apt-cache policy linux":
linux:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.6.31.20.33
  Version table:

     2.6.31.14.27 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

Please let me know if there's anything more I can provide to shed some
light onto this problem.
