@DavidM: The problem is that the change that seems to have introduced this problem is in a common path for many drivers. We can't be sure that if we revert the change that we won't cause issues for other users. Because we don't have any expertise in this area on the Ubuntu kernel team, we have to work with upstream to get these issues addressed. The upstream bug report is the best way to have this issue resolved. If a resolution is found we can look into including it in the Ubuntu kernels.
