Mark, I prefer the left-side layout, but what is your answer to how it will work with gnome-shell? Assuming Ubuntu in the future will use gnome- shell instead of metacity+gnome-panel, that being the direction that upstream is taking, have you or your design team considered the effect a maximized window having its window controls right under the hot corner for entering the overlay?
