Hi Martin,

                On trying to remove beagle the other day I was prompted
to do dpkg --configure -a which brought up a lot of Python related
stuff. I haven't had another crash since then.

There was no output from python -c 'import gnome' :

It is likely that the dpkg --configure -a solved whatever it was.
