I've upgraded to kernel 2.6.32-17-generic and the freeze/glow disappeared. Instead, the brightness is blinking and I can see some horizontal white lines filckering on the screen. But at least, it is not freezing anymore.
(This is without the nomodeset option, still using the default kernel on grub.
