I have updated my alsamixer and pulseaudio with the Ubuntu Audio Dev team PPA, currently I have:
pulseaudio 0.9.21-32-g8478 AlsaMixer v1.0.20 Now the volume knob works (weirdly enough there is now no volume in alsamixer that is controlled by the knob, and only one output volume [Speaker] ?!?)
