The problem persists with todays upgrade to kernel 2.6.31-21. It's been there since -18.
In my case, no sound hardware appears to be detected. Opening GNOME alsa mixer leaves me with a blank window. I've seen the -21 update said something about improving compatibility of ALSA with Macbook 5,1 and 5,2.
