After recent updates to Lucid, I've noticed that there seems to be no integration of Gwibber with the Messaging Menu at all: when I open Gwibber, its entry on the Messaging Menu stays at "Set up broadcast accounts" and has no running indicator. So I'd guess the problem is broader than simply "not adding mentions", it's not communication with the indicator at all.
