For interest, doesn't happen with later versions of gnome-shell. I have now installed Version: 2.29.1+git20100325.6deee27d-0ubuntu1~9.10~ricotz1 from http://ubuntu-tweak.com/source/ricotz-testing/ and I can run terminal server client with no issues.
