I tried 10.04, In that also I can't connect to internet. But there is an option for my BSNL EVDO in network manager.
Also I saw there is a place to edit and create our own Status message in the "MeMenu"(if it is the right name). So custom statuses won't be a problem I think. Because of not connected to the internet, I couldn't check the empathy problem. But I made a new account and that box is greyed out.
