with the normal ubuntu package? for me, it tries pulseaudio first.

excellent, so there is probably no problem in mplayer.

but does it produce any sound? or are you 'just' not able to change the
volume?


in any case, please attach:

 a) the full mplayer output, including the full command line
 b) the contents of /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf
 c) the contents of ~/.mplayer/config
