To preface, I have two monitors (Samsung 213T) and an nvidia graphics
card.

Ok, here's what happened:

1. Once I got to the 5 solid red dots I pressed "Alt-SysRq-K" and then
one of the monitors stopped receiving a signal. The other monitor (my
right side monitor) showed 3 stripes of malformed display info in the
top 10% of the screen. They reminded me of when looking at the lines on
a CRT monitor set to the wrong resolution or refresh rate, but they were
different. The first line showed a series of blocks of red dots
equidistant from each other, each slightly different, looking something
like braille. The second striped line showed a compressed word "ubuntu"
white on purple background. The third line showed white dots somewhat
similar to the first line. The rest of the screen was black.

2. I tried "Alt-SysRq-K" again, and this time the CD started to spin up
again. The screens go black, then a white cursor appears on each screen,
and the startup sound is played. No splash screen is displayed, it boots
immediately to the desktop.

As for reporting the error, I had problems as well.

The first time I tried to go to a console and run the apport command,
firefox startedup and then showed an "internal service error" on the
login.launchpad.net site. I figured I needed to be logged in for this to
work. So I logged in, tried again, and got to another page saying I was
logged in. But then there was an additional button saying "sign me into
edge environment", so I clicked that, and then on the next screen
selected "change anything" and retried running the command and this time
it worked. There were additional errors in the console:
